Stevenson January Newsletter
Happy New Year 2017! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break with their families and loved ones!
It is good to be back and we are excited to continue to provide your children with the best possible educational experience, but we need your help! Please continue to make sure your child is here on time, ready to learn, every day.
I know the weather is a challenge in Chicago in the winter, but if your child misses a little, he or she misses a lot as our teachers cover a great deal of interesting content every day! Research shows the most successful students miss five days or less for the entire school year.
Our attendance for December was one of the worst months we have had and we need your help to improve attendance in January. To give our students added incentive to come to school on time every day, no matter what the weather, we are going to have FREE OUT OF UNIFORM days on Fridays for any room that has Perfect Attendance Monday through Thursday of that week (no absences, no tardies, no early dismissals). Your child’s teacher will tell the class at the end of the day on Thursday if they earned the FREE OUT OF UNIFORM Day for Friday. Thank you for your help in improving attendance!
We have ACCESS testing and NWEA MAP testing this month. As the tests take place every day and different rooms and grades test on different days, it is important that your child be here every day during testing. Students typically do not do as well on make-up tests as they would if they tested on their scheduled day with their classmates.
I am excited to report that the Children and Families Unit is returning to Stevenson in our Branch building in partnership with the Greater Chicago Food Depository. They can assist you with enrolling in low cost/free health insurance (Medicaid/All Kids) and SNAP (formerly known as food stamps). We will be hosting an Enrollment Event at the Branch on Thursday, January 26 from 9:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. To make an appointment for that day or any day afterwards, you can call 773-553-5437.
Parking continues to be a challenge around the school and it is worse with the snow and cold weather. The cones are placed to help you better see the posted no parking zones around the school. There is no parking on 80th Street on the school side of the street during school hours. The no parking zone continues south on Kostner in front of the school all the way to the fence by the playlot. Our school security staff is comprised of Chicago Police Officers and they are authorized to issue parking citations to anyone who parks in the no parking zones. Also, please be reminded that the school parking lot is for teachers and staff only. Please do not pull into the lot to park or drop off students. Cars that do not have a Stevenson parking permit may be ticketed or towed. Our school was designed to be a neighborhood walking destination. We have more than 500 cars coming twice a day on a narrow city street with no available parking. Thank you to parents who walk with their children. For those of you who must drive, thank you for following the established traffic pattern going south on Kostner and for not parking in no parking zones.
