Stevenson April News Letter
As you know, almost every month, I write about the importance of student attendance. Our school has been hit hard this year by illnesses that have affected students and staff. However, our student attendance rate is still ahead of last year’s. Thank you, parents, who send your children to school on time every day! If Stevenson has the highest attendance in Network 10 for March 23rd, April 2nd, AND April 3rd, we will win a party for the whole school! Our students would really like to win this. As an added incentive, all three of those days will be FREE OUT OF UNIFORM days. In addition, for those students who are here ALL THREE OF THOSE DAYS and only for those students, they will receive three additional out of uniform days April 4th, 5th, and 6th. If they are absent March 23rd, April 2nd or April 3rd, they must be in uniform April 4th, 5th, AND 6th.
After school tutoring has now ended. Please see your child’s teachers to discuss ways you can help your child at home.
Report Card Pick-Up is April 18th. There will be no school for students that day. Your child’s teacher will ask you to sign up for a designated time for your conference. LSC Elections will also be held that day.
Thank you to Alderman Curtis and all the parents, community members, teachers, and staff who attended the meeting to discuss traffic safety and parking issues. Please be reminded not to park in the posted NO PARKING zones north of the school and in front of the school on Kostner and near the intersections around the school. At parent and community request, the city of Chicago will begin issuing citations for illegally parked cars. Also, please be reminded not to park in front of our neighbor’s driveways or in the faculty/staff parking lot. Only staff members with a staff permit visible in the car may park in the lot. All others may also be ticketed or towed. Alderman Curtis has also promised to pursue making Kostner one-way going south at entry and dismissal and is researching funding for a parent parking lot and/or parent drop-off lanes.
At our meeting with the Alderman, teachers and parents requested changes to our entry procedures to improve student safety. When we return from break, all K, 1, 2 students will enter and exit from Door #2 by the playground; all grades 3, 4 students will enter and exit from Door #3 by where the two buildings connect; and all grade 5 & 6 students will enter in the morning through Door #4 and exit after school through Door #5. ALL students will be allowed to enter at 8:20 a.m. each day. They will grab breakfast as they enter. K-2 students will line up in the gym and students in grades 3-6 will line up in the cafeteria where their teachers will promptly pick them up at 8:30 a.m. Students who are not in line at 8:30 a.m. in the gym or cafeteria will be considered tardy. No students, except for pre-k, should be on the west side of the building before or after school. No students or parents should be in the parking lot.
At the branch, all students will enter through the entrance by the teachers’ lounge at 8:20 a.m. and line up in the branch gym to be picked up at 8:30 a.m.
As we enter the fourth quarter of the school year, we want all of our students to finish the school year strong. We want to see all grades improve and see our students here every day. Thank you, parents, for all that you do to prepare your student for success. We have great teachers here who really enjoy working with your children.
Mr. O’Toole, Principal

Congratulations to our Art Teacher, Ms. Lombardi.
Her students painted the planters that were on display at the Home & Garden Show at Navy Pier.
These planters will return to Stevenson and be featured prominently on our campus.
